In popular speech, it certainly comes from "Star Wars", and the idea of people such as Darth Vader "going over to the dark side of the Force". In his turn George Lucas presumably got it (not necessarily consciously) from Jungian psychological theory, which holds that the unconscious mind has a "shadow" or "dark" side, consisting of one's repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts.
