Sew buttons on your underwear etc.

I noticed that someone was asking about "sew buttons on your underwear" and other said that it was from Connecticut or that it was a nonsensical answer to "So what?". My mother, who was born and died in WI always said "sew buttons on your underwear, zippers are out of style." She was born in 1925. I don't believe the saying in all that nonsensical... many of the saying that generations of past said were based on something real. At one time underwear did have buttons on them. I believe I read somewhere that undershirts and underwear had buttons on them so you could button the undershirt to the bottoms, kind of like old time suspenders. Where the zipper part came from I haven't a clue, but I'm still searching...
I also saw someone asking about "just like downtown"... this is another saying my mother used to say... it means... going downtown was a big deal (It was even for us back in the late 60s & early 70s... it usually is if you're from a smaller town or suburb of a bigger city) Just like downtown meant something amazing or new or "cool".
