Land with your bum in the butter

I would like to know the origin of the saying 'land with your bum in the butter'. I grew up in South Africa, knowing this saying but when mentioning it in New Zealand and Australia, it wasn't understood. I am sure it is an English saying and would like to know it's meaning (so I can explain it more succintly) and origin. Thank you.
