: : Resident of Alton. --Saying that someone is wrong without evidence to support your own claims
: : is unjust and not very adamant. I understood Frankie's light hearted witticism about teenagers
: : in "Fat Chance" and even found an obvious validity towards it. Scott Marsden's view about "Sweet Fanny Adam's" to me was interesting because facts of a murder and expressions from the murder could have evolved or have double meanings. Those two and others use light witty humor from time to time which breaks up some of the mundane historical facts.
: : Try to use words less harsh like: "incorrect," "my opinion," "my experience" or "in my neck of the woods this is how we use the expression".
: : You will find then, a very friendly, intellectually stimulating and enlightening array of topics, expressions AND PEOPLE. This isn't a forum for verbal jousting.
: : Please stay because we value everyone's input. Being cordial will make your responses interesting.
: : To everyone else, my apologies for this interruption.
: Surely we do no service to the Emperor if we compliment him on his fine apparel when, in truth, he has no clothes. See Frankie's contribution to "call a spade a spade"
I'm sorry that my point flew right over your head. Your "Emperor" analogy doesn't fit here.
Yes I saw Frankie's contribution,...did you? He CLEARLY states that the explanation wasn't his but a post he found in this forum from February.
So he's not exactly attesting to its truth.
Now, isn't that a NICE WAY of being straight forward. If you see ESC's explanation a few after his find, you will notice it mirrors the first sentence. Because of Frankie's post, I visited the February archives to see what was originally discussed and by whom.
How do you know that "Call a spade a spade didn't evolve into different meanings from its original. How do you know that a minor contribution by someone isn't used as a foundation of research to finding the real origin. It's been said that if you don't like what you're watching on TV,.change the channel. Having said that, I will not click on your replies anymore and skip over them. Every once in a while someone like you comes....then goes.
P.S. --Contributions spark interesting discussions --notice the icon to enter this site: ("Discussion Forum") it's not called "State a fact that you cannot support, tell everyone they're wrong and leave Forum". That's a site that you should go look for. Good-Bye.
