What’s the origin of the phrase ‘all together now’?
The phrase comes from the world of music-hall performance, where it was a stock line used by performers to prompt an audience to join in with a song. A singer would run through a verse or chorus once, then call out “all together now” as the cue for the whole room to sing along on the next repetition. This use as a sing-along cue seems to have been well established in music halls before it was ever written down as a title or catchphrase in its own right, and no dated first print source for the phrase itself has been confirmed.
The clearest evidence for this background comes from Paul McCartney, who explained where he took the title of the Beatles song “All Together Now” from. Speaking to Barry Miles for the 1997 book Many Years From Now, he described the practice directly: “When [the Music Hall performers] were singing a song, to encourage the audience to join in, they’d say, ‘All together now,’ so I just took it and read another meaning into it, of we are all together now.” That second meaning, of people being united rather than simply singing in time, is the layer McCartney added, but his account confirms that the phrase already existed as a familiar music-hall prompt long before he used it.
Because the phrase functioned as spoken performance patter rather than as printed text, it is not the kind of expression that tends to leave an easy paper trail, which is why no earlier written record has been pinned down. Its use today, as a way of coordinating a group action of any kind, still carries that same sense of a leader counting the room in before everyone acts as one.
