Meaning

A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle

The meaning of the phrase

A woman does not need a man in order to be complete, happy or fulfilled.

The saying makes its point through absurdity: a fish has no use for a bicycle, so pairing the two highlights something entirely unnecessary. Applied to women and men, the joke is that a woman’s independence and fulfilment do not depend on having a man in her life. It became a catchphrase of the women’s liberation movement, used to puncture the assumption that a woman is somehow incomplete without a male partner. It is usually delivered as a one-line rebuttal rather than a considered argument, and it keeps its force precisely because the comparison is so deliberately mismatched.

What’s the origin of the phrase ‘a woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle’?

The line is widely attributed to the feminist writer and activist Gloria Steinem, but Steinem herself has rejected the credit. She has said the words belong to the Australian social activist Irina Dunn, who claimed to have coined the saying and scrawled it on a bathroom wall in 1970. The earliest instance of the phrase that has actually been traced in print appeared as an unattributed piece of graffiti reported in the Sydney Morning Herald in January 1975, which fits with an Australian origin circulating a few years before it reached the wider public record.

The joke’s structure, however, did not spring from nowhere. A related image turns up over a century earlier, with the sexes reversed. In 1858 a newspaper in North Carolina reprinted a poem, originally from a paper in Winchester, Virginia, that compared a man without a woman to a fish without a tail, framing the man as the incomplete one. That version carried the opposite message: a man needs a woman to function. The modern saying appears to have taken this old comic formula and turned it on its head, replacing the missing tail with a bicycle and reversing who is said to be lacking, so that it became an assertion of female self-sufficiency rather than male dependence.
