: In the film "Good Morning Vietnam" Robin Williams refers to lesbians as "women in comfortable shoes" can anyone shed light as to its origin.

I'll have to do some research about the first use. But I can certainly shed some light on the reasoning behind the phrase. The only reason in the world women wear spikes (f**k-me shoes) is to attract men. So if a woman is a lesbian (or at an age where she doesn't care anymore or, perhaps, just a young woman with good sense), she wears comfortable shoes. There's is another "shoe phrase," "little old ladies in tennis shoes." Same line of thought.
