Hotch potch

: I came across this phrase recently, in a book: "hotch potch". I think this is the Anglicized version of the American "hodge podge", meaning "a miscellany".

I like the idea that it might be an English version of an American original.

Both are in fact variations on 'hotch pot' which is a legal term meaning a common fund which is divided among the children in the event of a parent dying intestate, or other circumstances in which monies have to be divided among a group of people.
