: : Who first used the expression "The sweet smell of victory"?

: The phrase I've heard is -- sweet smell of success.

There was a 1957 movie called "The Sweet Smell of Success". In Google News Archive, that phrase has hits back to 1956 but only in reference to the movie. "The sweet smell of victory" turns up suddenly in 1948 in a story about the 1948 Republican convention. Haven't found anything earlier yet...
