Stargate phrases

Hi, I would like to know the meaning of some phrases from the tv-series Stargate. The phrases were said from the character Oma Desala:

"The river tells no lies, yet standing at its shores the dishonest man still hears them"

"If you immediately know the candlelight is fire, the meal was cooked a long time ago."

"Lightning flashes, sparks shower, in one blink of your eyes you have mis-seen."

"A Tall Man Cannot Hide In The Short Grass."
