Pie plates

Posted by Rachel on November 14, 2005

Ok, here's another good one. From a lecture in 1954, person is referring to World War II: "I myself had twenty-one medals and palms before I got through with that war. You can't walk when you got that much. You're wearing them in pie plates." Any idea what the "pie plates" means here? I'm guessing one would have their medals somehow strung together so as to form a circle, similar to a pie plate, but I get the idea it's really slang. Please help.
