: Ok, here's another good one. From a lecture in 1954, person is referring to World War II: "I myself had twenty-one medals and palms before I got through with that war. You can't walk when you got that much. You're wearing them in pie plates." Any idea what the "pie plates" means here? I'm guessing one would have their medals somehow strung together so as to form a circle, similar to a pie plate, but I get the idea it's really slang. Please help.

When I was a kid, our neighbors used to hang aluminum pie plates in their cherry tree to freighten birds away. Maybe it was common practice back in those days, for people to hang pie plates in fruit trees to scare birds away. Anyway, it certainly catches your eye the way a chest full of medals would.
