"and the art of"

Chaining two things together, be they otherwise related or not, with the words "and the art of" is now a commonplace - but when did it start? I heard it first in the title of Robert M. Pirsig's famous novel, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." But is that the origin?
