One example "On the op-ed page of The New York Times, columnist Maureen Dowd gripes (reg. req.) that men..." where "gripes", in this case as in all the others, is the name of a hotlink. Do you have any idea what "(reg. reg.) means?

It's probably after a link to a story, and Registration is Required to get to it. The NYT as I recall is a free registration.
