Fearless Leader

We've got an international cast of characters here, and I'm often hard pressed to define an idiom. Where does the reference to "Fearless Leader" come from? In this case, I meant where had the director gone, but my Austrian visitor didn't know the idiom. Thank you, this is a fun forum!
