: : : My friend's grandfather used to say this when the weather was very hot. I always thought he was making a mistake, saying "love" instead of "a Dutch oven," but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows the phrase the way Claude Jensen used to say it.
: : : Thanks.

: : I found it in a reference. But it doesn't say why "Dutch" love.

: : DUTCH LOVE, HOTTER THAN - adj. phr. Also "hot as Dutch love." North. Usually of weather; very warm; also fig. of intimate relationships, passionate. From "Dictionary of American Regional English," Volume II by Frederic G. Cassidy and Joan Houston Hall (1991, Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass., and London, England).

Thanks! I've sent this on to my friend. We've been wondering about this for 30 years.
