: While living in Ireland in the late 50's, my grandmother, my father and almost everyone in our family used to have a saying, "Oh dear me, such is life without a wife and looking for a lover."
: Was this a widely used saying or just locally Irish?

In the east end of London in the 1930 and 40s we used to hear 'such is life without a wife, and ten times worse with one!'
