Middle finger

What is the origin of choice to use that finger to insult somebody.

I expect the fact that the middle finger is the longest may have something to do with it. (Try this experiment. Make a hole in a peice of cardboard big enough for a finger to go through. Then see which finger can reach the furtherest. Draw your own conclusions!)
