'She's a real hothouse tomata'

My Dad used to occasionally say of some woman "she's a real hothouse tomato" (or "... tomata" actually). Not having enough experience of life to understand the context of reference, or the tone of voice, I'm still puzzled by this description. Any ideas? - Patty
