: Who can PLEASE give me the origins of the phrase "blow for freedom"? I have combed the Internet and found nothing of its origins, although it is quite ubiquitous.
"To strike a blow for something" is to take an action in support of some cause, thus the action becomes "a blow for something". "Blow" is in the fighting sense - a stroke with a fist or weapon.
