I would like to know this, so I can apply it to the Godspell song By My Side, that says that she'll put a pebble in her shoe and "I shall call the pebble Dare", etc. I've been all over the internet and cannot find an answer.... it's making me crazy. Ideas anyone?

Sounds like an old proverb or saying. Meaning if there is an irritant, it will take your mind off your troubles. Perfect example: children.
