: : A quick check of Google news archive shows this phrase to predate Ms Bombeck by quite a bit, at least to 1897 possibly further.

: There is a phrase or whatever you want to call it circulating, basically talking about wearing out instead of burning out. Sliding into the grave sideways and saying "What a ride!"

Life is not a journey to the grave
With the intention of
Arriving safely in a pretty
And well preserved body,
But rather to skid in broadside,
Thoroughly used up,
Totally worn out,
And loudly proclaiming,

WOW !!!! What a ride!
