: On the US led invasion of Iraq, Tony Blair says in his resignation speech "Hands on Heart" I did what I thought was right. Now I want to understand the meaning of the phrase "Hands on Heart".
I don't have a short answer. Except (see link to archives) the heart is thought to be the seat of thought and emotions. And people put their hand on their hearts when making a promise or pledge. Or when they are swearing that they are telling the truth -- cross my heart and hope to die if I'm lying. //www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/19/messages/612.html
