: : Not sure what I'm doing here - happened upon this 2005 thread: RE Softly, Softly Catchee Monkey - what is origin? Some silly stuff posted...
: : OSoftly, Softly Catchee Monkey..., is an Ashanti (Ghana) proverb quoted by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the Boy Scouts
: Yes, there is some silly stuff posted, some of it posted by me. However, the first post on this subject correctly identified Lord Baden-Powell as having learned the proverb in Ghana (or the Gold Coast, as it was then known). That post is dated 2002.

anybody else wonder about the unfortunate title of Baden-Powell's seminal work?
whilst there are many adults who just like encouraging and nurturing youngsters, in this age of hyper-sensitivity to suggestions of child abuse, I doubt that the title "Scouting for boys" would have got past the publisher.
