I don't know about the first phrase. But the second is "You don't know sh*t from Shinola." Black Talk: Words and Phrases from the Hood to the Amen Corner by Geneva Smitherman (Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, 1994) states: "Sh*t from Shinola. See 'Ass from a hole in the ground.' 'Oh, no, I ain no fool by a long shot. I can tell sh*t from Shinola.' 'Shinola' is a brand name for an inexpensive and very stron-smelling liquid shoe polish that once was widely used because it was cheap."
