In a mexican stand off, the first to shoot dies - in others words, you have Three gun fighters and the first to shoot runs the risk of being shot by the one he did n't aim at - Hence A STAND OFF.
An example of a mexican stand off is in the film 'the good, the bad and the ugly'
There is nothing derogatory about this and, in fact, the concept is quite neat.
How many people could work what was going on in the final gun fight scene in 'the good, the bad and the ugly', where three of them are standing in a triangle and looking at each other for ages? It was a Mexican STAND OFF!
