: : what is the meaning of "put away"?

:
: The most usual meaning is to tidy [something] away [into its proper storage place]. But according to context it can have numerous other meanings. For instance it can mean "divorce, repudiate" as in "to put away one's wife".

Many are the figurative uses of this phrase, as construed by Victoria. It is time to put away childish things--not toys, in this case. Well, perhaps toys, too, if we use toys figuratively. And in the U.S., law enforcement tries to put away crimininals in the proper place, that is, in stir.
