'to play Hamlet'

: what is the origin of the yorshire phrases 'to play Hamlet' and 'to play pop' eg.'when your your father gets home he will play Hamlet' in other words you will get into trouble.

At a guess, it means that he will give a dramatic performance (presumably of rage.)

No idea about 'play pop' though.
