: Has anyone heard of the phrase "riding the back of his neck," as in having an Instructor/teacher riding the back of one's neck.

Sounds like a mixture of two words/phrases. "Ride" can mean mean to nag or harass, as a bad teacher might do. "Breathe down [the back of] one's neck" means to follow closely in an oppressive or threatening manner.
