Keep sending me kites

what does the phrase "keep sending me kites" or "keep sending him kites" mean pertaing to the mail?

I don't think this fits the above sentences unless the person is in jail. But a couple of sites (googling kites + slang) say that kites are prison slang for mail or letters received.
