Halls of Fame

Posted by Jeff Rankin on March 31, 2005

Today, the term "hall of fame" is ubiquitous--shrines both physical and figurative have been created for not just sports, but industrial achievement, the arts and the sciences. A colleague just raised the question, "When was the phrase 'hall of fame' first used? Did it originate with baseball's museum in Cooperstown or is it a much older concept?"

Any earlier examples would be appreciated!
