Sick as a chip

Well, watching Question Time last night I saw one of the guests looking totally fed up and non-plussed at the line of questioning - she looks "sick as a chip" I thought, and said so to my other half, who then looked at me incredulously and said "you just made that phrase up!".
Whilst I would love to start new phrases off I am certain it's not my creation, anybody know the origin?
