Blowing Smoke

Where does the phrase "Don't blow somke up my ass" somce from?
The meaning is "don't give me false praise" or "Don't lie to me".
The only clue I've found is that it may have something to do with tobacco enemas

Here's what was said during a previous discussion:

The smoke is the same as in "smoke and mirrors" to descrive the distractive illusions of a magician.

And "smoke and mirrors":

Meaning Trickery or deception.
Origin From the performances of stage conjurers who use these devices to hoodwink the audience. Used more generally since the 1980s.
