: : : : : I am interested in finding out if any one knows who said "The opposite of love is not hate, it is use." My philosphy teacher told us that if we could find out who said that quote that we could have 10 bonus points on our next test, which is this Wednesday (4/7). I have been searching on the Internet for hours and can only come up with "The opposite of love is not hate it is indifference." I am starting to wonder if he got the quote messed up. Any help would be appreciated.

: : : : The correct answer is: your philosophy teacher said it.

: : : I will look in my quote books this evening. It's no fair if it is something your teacher heard on TV.

: : So far, I've found what you found.

: : "The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
: : The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference.
: : The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference.
: : And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference."

: Mike Scherschligt, father of five, teaches theology of the body each spring at the St. Lawrence Center in Lawrence. The course is based on 129 homilies of Pope John Paul II. He believes NFP is the only morally acceptable option for Catholics.
: "The true meaning of sex is intricately bound [up] in the true meaning of life - that we are made in the image and likeness of God and make visible God's invisible mystery, that he is love," Scherschligt said.
: "God designed our body to express our soul, and sex is the body language that expresses the wedding vows and the love of the Trinity," Scherschligt said. "If we want to find happiness, sex has to be truly giving - a total gift of self. The opposite of love is use."

: "Mortal Sin occurs when we paratke in sin that seperates us from God, namely, the Ten Commandments. When talking about chastity, remember what JP II says, "The opposite of Love is use." Also keep in mind that lust is a selfish act that aims to please yourself or another, Love is God, and Love seeks to serve only Him."

"...The programme of utilitarianism, based on an individualistic understanding of freedom--a freedom without responsibilities-is the opposite of love, even as an expression of human civilization considered as a whole. When this concept of freedom is embraced by society, and quickly allies itself with varied forms of human weakness, it soon proves a systematic and permanent threat to the family. In this regard, one could mention many dire consequences, which can be statistically verified, even though a great number of them are hidden in the hearts of men and women like painful, fresh wounds."

Utilitarianism, according to Merriam-Webster online is:
Main Entry:
Pronunciation: -E-&-"ni-z&m
Function: noun
1 : a doctrine that the useful is the good and that the determining consideration of right conduct should be the usefulness of its consequences; specifically : a theory that the aim of action should be the largest possible balance of pleasure over pain or the greatest happiness of the greatest number
2 : utilitarian character, spirit, or quality
