Hail, fellow, well met

Does anyone know the derivation/meaning of this, as in 'He was a hale fellow well met'?

"Hail" is a greeting. If you use that spelling and type these two words into the Search Archives box:

hail fellow

you'll get some past discussions that explain it all.
