They are anything that's easy to eat and are usually reserved for when you are feeling fed up. Foods that take you back to your childhood are top of the list - a kind of culinary security blanket.

High calorie count? But yes. Mashed potato and butter followed by steamed pudding and custard would do nicely - and there's always chocolate of course.

As for who originated the term I don't know but I would guess you wouldn't need to look much further than the customers of English public schools.
