Devil pays double

: Has anyone else heard of this phrase - I'm sure it came from an old western film, but I have used it for a number of years relating it to paying for an easy ride later. For example whilst cycling in France we found a 3 mile downhill run, but the 'Devil pays double' in that we would probably have to cycle as far again uphill, but twice as steep.

I've looked in several references, including a cowboy slang book, and haven't found it yet.
