First off it is "in" the wall,not "on" the wall.
Big difference since interviews with the band members provide hints that the "bricks" in the wall are specific events that added to Waters' increasing isolation--"the wall"--from his fans and the world.

I have never heard of the expression before Floyd except maybe in "The Hollow Men"--"We are the hollow men, heads filled with straw". The expression might be in that poem--I am not 100% sure though.
