Expression roots and meaning

Could not find a listing for the expression "to drop a dime" meaning to inform on someone ( by dropping a dime in a pay phone. This should be added to the archives I believe. I first heard the saying from a L.A. investigator in about 11978, common street slang.
any inside info?
