: Has anyone heard the saying, smoking it over and do you know where and why it started. My husband says it when you see a group of people or animals in a group.. he says, it looks like they are smokin in over.
Ever since tobacco has had widespread use, people would congregate
to smoke together - whether it was Native Americans or Dutch merchants,
people have sat down with their pipes and had a companionable smoke
together. In warmer parts of the USA, you get the cliche of people
sitting smoking on the porch. In literature, even Holmes and Watson
would have a smoke together whilst discussing a case.
I can't think that the expresion is at all odd - just a bit of mild
antropomorphism.
