Shallow grave

Hello, does anyone know the origins of the expression "shallow grave"? What are its connotations on top of its literal meaning? Can it be used only in the context of murders/potential murders?

Murderers usually don't have time to dig a six-feet-deep grave. So their victims are found in "shallow graves." That's the only meaning I know.
