I have always assumed that "past experience" was one of the countless examples of unnecessary redundencies in common usage. But you do make a good point that "past experience" can be distinguished from the present experience that is being shared by the speaker and the audience. For example if two people are working together trying to solve a problem and have tried various unsuccessful remedies. One of them might refer to their "past experience" that occurred before they were working together.
