I heard the phrase: " She shed her skin and walked away" ,a few times on tv and I want to know what it means.

When I was young in the West Virginia mountains, my mother would send me to the cellar to get cans of food. I would find empty snake skins on the shelves. They found a cool spot to shed their skins.
