"Vanilla" friend?

The phrase "vanilla friend" seems to come from kinky sexual practices.
If you are a practitioner of bondage and discipline and you have a close friend or family member that does not share your enjoyment of your views but accepts you anyway then that friend or family member is considered a "vanilla friend".
May be from the phrase "plain vanilla"?
