A reference book exists that ranks English words by their frequency in print (not in speech). I don't remember its title. I saw it cited once because experimental psychologists studying some language-related thing had used it in their research. Meanwhile, www.googlefight.com is useful as a rough guide when you want to compare frequencies. Of course, it will return exaggerated numbers for Internet-related words like "windows" and "web."
