Dead bird

A loud, sudden thud on one of the french windows.... A few moments later ... on the paved terrace ... a dark blot upon the stone -- a dead bird.... On the instant of my seeing that lifeless shape a thud fell, leaden, upon my heart.... "You know what it's supposed to mean: a death in the family."
