Just a guess

It was called something else on my menu - I'd have spotted "venaison". I am thinking, on the basis of TheFallen's research that it was the vowel sounds that let me down. I am sure I would have used a short 'i' in the middle, rather than an "a" sound. I am guessing the vowel sound might be even more important than in English based on other experiences I have had mispronouncing French.
