: : : I recently came across this phrase - 'And the cow jumped over the moon'. What does this mean?
: : If I were to use it - which I never have - I'd use it to express disbelief,
: It's part
of an old nursery rhyme -
: 'Hey Diddle, Diddle, the cat and the Fiddle, the
Cow jumped over the Moon. The little Dog laughed to see such fun, and the Cat
ran away with the spoon'
The dish ran away with the spoon, as I remember it. I also vaguely remember hearing an explanation, although I cannot recall where.
