The idea of ‘brat summer’ came from the 7 June 2024 release of a club=pop album called ‘brat’ from the British musician Charli XCX. It’s an album about empowerment through friendship, and having fun and partying. It’s reminiscent of the techno music of the 1990s and early 2000s. The album received critical acclaim and shot to Number 3 on the US Billboard 200 charts. It particularly resonated with women and the LGBTQ community. The album’s iconic neon green cover also helped propel ‘brat’ into meme-status. As the meme status continued to trend over the summer, the term ‘brat summer’ was used to reflect and promote the associated mindset and outlook, about partying and enjoying life no matter what. This particularly struck a chord with millennials, who are the same age as the singer and can relate to everything she was singing about.
