: : Hello am looking for the origin and full meaning of a phrase used in our family, we are Australians.
: : "Better than a slap in the face with a wet calamari!"
: : Looking forward to responses.

: There is a phrase -- a slap in the face with a wet fish. Sounds like the above is a variation.

The English use of the word "calamari" is associated with cooking--specifically, Italian cooking. It is not usually used in the singular, and indeed is not the singular of the Italian word for squid, which is calamaro (plural, calamari). Perhaps the phrase would gain some immediacy if it were rendered as, "hit in the face with a wet squid." (Is there such a things as a dry squid?)
